I have to admit something . . . I am a complete Harry Potter fan(atic). I couldn’t read each new book fast enough. I remember purchasing volume 6 while in an airport, waiting to board a plane. I barely spoke to anyone for the next umpteen hours as I devoured each scrumptious page. To be perfectly honest, I didn’t care that I was being anti-social, I was totally invested in Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and needed to know what was about to happen to them.

Invested is the operative word. I had spent hours reading and worrying about these characters in J.K. Rowling’s separate masterpieces.

And that’s why book series are so wonderful.

When you commit to a series, you no longer have to worry about the author’s need set up the back story, or develop the characters, they are old friends and you already know of their plight. Instead, the author can pick up where he/she left off last and we all continue on this lovely page filled journey.

Don’t get me wrong, I have read many, many stand-alone books, but on some occasions, wouldn’t it be have been nice if the story had continued in yet another book or two or three?

In ‘The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency’ series, it wasn’t a continuous story, but rather separate books featuring familiar characters, who were having new adventures. I still enjoyed these books, because I was fond of the characters.

In a nutshell, book series are a win-win, and I will continue searching them out, knowing that sadly, there will be some series that lose steam and my interest, however, there will be others that will make me a joyful devotee.
